Using The CDs with Winboard
Here's how I downloaded and use Winboard to access the games on the CDs
Step 1. Download the Winboard program.
a.) browse to Tim Mann's Excellent Chess Page.
scroll down to the Winboard For 32-bit Microsoft Windows (95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, XP) section
b.) click on Download stable WinBoard 4.2.7 and save the exe to your local PC
Step 2. a.) click Start -> Run -> Browse and select the program you just downloaded (winboard-4_2_7a.exe)
and run it.
as with anything downloaded from the internet, you are responsible for
protecting your PC from viruses, etc.
b.) select the appropriate responses during the installation. this should put a Winboard
icon on your start menu. it may identify itself as a link to freechess.org ( my
favorite internet chess server - and its FREE! )
c.) double click that icon to launch Winboard. If a pop-up appears asking you "What
would you like to do?", select "Play against a chess engine or match two chess engines"
and click [OK].
Step 3. a.) When the Winboard interface launches, select FILE -> Load Game and browse to the
location where the games collection from the CD was unzipped.
b.) select the ECO game collection you would like to see, click it (highlight it), and
then click [OPEN].
c.) A list of games will appear in a window called "Game List". to load the first one
click the [LOAD] button.
Step 4. Enjoy!
