Winning With Reverse Chess Strategy by William Reuter (WWRCS)

ISBN 0-938650-95-5

The mantra for this little (149 pages, including Bibliography) book is that sometimes the best moves in a game aren't those that thrust forward deep into the enemy's position. Rather, there are those positions where the move that amazes and astounds is the move where a retreat seems to give up space and time, and sometimes even material. The moves of Steinitz immediately come to mind, and dutifully enough, the first chapter of the book is devoted to the self-proclaimed (and *mostly* universally recognized) first chess champion of the world. The largest collection of games, given as examples, belongs to the author, a USCF Senior Master from the great state of Texas. This reviewer found the inclusion of complete games, often with lengthy comments, to be a major asset of WWRCS. Included are games from many names devotees of the Royal game would recognize: A. Anderssen, Zukertort, Alekhine, Capablanca, Keres, Fischer, Karpov, and many others. At times, we did find the wording a little stilted and cumbersome. At times, our own words are stilted and cumbersome. :-)
